Celebrating Suffolk Day

Today is the second annual Suffolk Day, and over the course of this week we have been detailing the 10 reasons why we love Suffolk.

For those who don’t know what Suffolk Day is all about, it is the day we celebrate the weird and wonderful things Suffolk is renowned for. From the arts scene to our Suffolk heritage, there is a lot for us to shout about and to be proud of.

So without further ado, here is our list of 10 reasons why we love Suffolk…

1) First on our list is the tiny attraction, The Nutshell pub in Bury St Edmunds. Serving beer since 1867, this quirky little tavern is only 15ft by 7ft, making it the UK’s smallest pub. There are some wonderful independent businesses across the county and some fantastic brewers too;

2) Long walks along the coast is second on our list. From the coastline at our home in Felixstowe to the wonders of Southwold and Aldeburgh, we have some marvellous scenery to enjoy.

3) Third on our list is the range of spectacular houses in the county. Our great Suffolk homes are brimming with personality and extraordinary features, from country estates to thatched cottages. In Suffolk we have some excellent estate agencies like Fenn Wright who know the county inside out and have a glorious property portfolio that will soon have you planning your next move.

4) Suffolk is home to some great actors, songwriters and singers, making home-grown talent another of the 10 reasons why we love Suffolk. From Sam Claflin (Hunger Games, Me Before You, Pirates of the Caribbean and Journey’s End) and Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Constant Gardener, Schindler’s List and Harry Potter) dominating the big screen, to Charlie Simpson (Busted and Fightstar) and of course Ed Sheeran taking the music industry by storm – Suffolk has the arts covered.

5) Everyone loves to sing and dance to their favourite artists, and that’s why we have festivals at number five on our list of 10 reasons why we love Suffolk. If you’ve never ventured to Latitude Festival or Jimmy’s Festival at Jimmy’s Farm you really must put these events on your calendar.

6) A lot of interest in our county’s heritage has been driven thanks to Suffolk boy Ed Sheeran’s ‘Castle on the Hill’. So much so, we had to put the East of England National Trust and English Heritage both on our list. From Framlingham Castle to Flatford Mill and Sutton Hoo, there is so much history for us to treasure and enjoy. If you need a crash course in Suffolk’s history, we’d recommend visiting Ipswich Museum, where the kids will love ’meeting’ Wool.i.am the Woolly Mammoth.

7) From rowing or sailing down beautiful rivers to cycling along country roads, there are many ways for us to get out and explore our beautiful county. That’s the reason why we have included the extraordinary Suffolk countryside on our list of reasons why we love Suffolk.

8) There is simply so much for families to get out and about and do in Suffolk. From crabbing at Waldringfield to enjoying a day out at Hollow Trees Farm, Pleasurewood Hills or by the seaside, there is a great range of activities for the family to enjoy.

9) Our penultimate reason in our series of 10 reasons why we love Suffolk has to be its beautiful, old buildings which are now open to the public. There is a wealth of heritage to explore; Ickworth House, Christchurch Mansion and Kentwell Hall are just some of the places to visit.

10) Last on our list has to be the fresh local produce. Thanks to the East of England Co-op we can enjoy a variety of local food and drinks on the beach this lunchtime to celebrate Suffolk Day.
