World Mental Health Day 2025 – How can helping others help our own mental health?

Let’s be honest, the world feels heavy right now. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and anxious.

But when we feel powerless, taking action, even in small way, can be transformative. Volunteering, giving back, or simply showing up for someone else shifts our focus from what we can’t control to what we can. It gives us purpose, connection, community and a sense of belonging. And that’s powerful medicine for our mental health.

Volunteering – a win-win for our wellbeing

Whether it’s fundraising, lending a hand at a community stall or charity shop, or offering your professional skills for free, volunteering is proven to boost mental wellbeing. It can get us moving, outdoors, laughing, learning, and meeting new people. It’s not just good for the cause, it’s good for us.

At Pier, we’ve seen this first-hand through our partnership with local environmental charity Still Good Food. This year, our team has thrown themselves into smashing fundraising challenges, offering pro bono media support, hosting coffee mornings, and volunteering at pop-up stalls. Next up? Pulling on their wellies and gleaning fields and orchards this harvest season.

But how has helping others helped us?

How giving back supports mental health at Pier

Laura
“The ‘Walk Against Waste’ was my first challenge since joining Pier, and it had a really positive impact on my mental health. It motivated me to get outdoors, stay active, and enjoy the fresh air—especially as the days get colder. What made it even more rewarding was knowing I was supporting Still Good Food while taking care of myself. Charity initiatives really can be a win-win.”

Amy
“I love my job and I’m proud of the meaningful work we do at Pier. But not everything has to be deep. Every time I support Still Good Food—whether through PR or volunteering—it feeds my soul.”

Lisa
“It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by everything going on in the world. Spending time with organisations like Still Good Food, who do so much good locally, is the antidote. Their values align with mine—and they’re lovely people too!”

Sian
“It has been a real privilege to support Still Good Food this year, from taking part in the Walk for Waste challenge to contributing to their King’s Award for Voluntary Service Award event in July. The charity’s impact on those in need across Suffolk is truly inspiring, and being able to play even a small part in that work is so rewarding.”
