Shuran joins Pier for summer internship

It's year three of our summer internship programme - find out how Shuran found her time with Pier.

This summer, through the fantastic Taylor Bennett Foundation, we were joined by intern Shuran Mo. We’ve loved having Shuran as an honourary member of the Pier team, and can’t wait to hear about her plans for the future! Here’s what Shuran had to say about her time with the Pier team.

“I learned about Pier through their partnership with the Summer Stars Programme with the Taylor Bennett Foundation. I was instantly attracted to Pier’s values and specialisation, especially in the renewable energy sector. As I’m currently studying for a Master’s degree in ‘Sustainable Business Development’, I wanted to expand my knowledge and observe more industry trends within this sector.

“I have always had a strong interest in diverse forms of communication through side hobbies such as blog writing and podcasting. However, I’ve never had any formal work experience in the communications sector – therefore stepping into the world of PR and Communications was something new and exciting.

“One of my first projects was coming up with social media content creation ideas for a client. This task was not only creative, but also challenging in terms of researching and analysing current trends and content themes. Through this task, I learned the importance of delving deep into audience insights and understanding the social media landscape. It was certainly a learning curve from brainstorming ideas and putting them to paper. The Pier team have been very supportive with providing me with guidance and going in the right direction, and it was really exciting to see my ideas come to life.

“I also thoroughly enjoyed creating blog posts for one of Pier’s current clients. The goal was to create exposure for the brand’s collaboration with an influencer. Crafting a compelling piece of writing that resonated with the audience was a fun and interesting task. I learned the essentials of copywriting and the insights and feedback I received helped to refine my writing style professionally.

“I also had the opportunity to work on a project for a local government initiative and spent time reviewing the press releases and wider campaign activity the Pier team had already delivered. It was a great experience for me to see the level of planning and preparation that goes into delivering a creative, integrated campaign.

“Media sell-ins are a common PR activity, but it was something brand new for me. This task allowed me to understand the importance of writing engaging emails and reaching out to relevant journalists. I also had to chance to work on activity for Pier’s charity partner, promoting Pier’s collaboration with them and their upcoming activities. This collaboration is super meaningful and is something that aligns with my personal values!

“My internship with Pier has been a transformative experience, to say the least. As a tight-knit community, the positive and collaborative atmosphere I received since day one from Pier allowed me to settle in comfortably. The continuous help and support enabled me to gain valuable skills in the PR and communications industry. I will for sure carry this valuable knowledge and experience ahead with me in my professional journey.”

Thanks Shuran. It’s been a pleasure welcoming you to Pier. For more on internships at Pier, you can read our policy or get in touch.
